Last Minute Train Travel Tips with Kids

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Traveling by train is an adventure in itself but as with any adventure, it can come with certain perils. This time, the dangers come with the fact that youre traveling with kids. They may be your little bundles of joy, but they can also be little terrors in inappropriate environments. Here are a few tips to ensure that train travel with your kids is fun but safe.

SOP
All the usual things you do when traveling with kids by car, plane, or even by ship still applies when youre traveling by train.

As always, start by making a list at least one week prior to your departure date. At this point, youre not yet feeling usual pressures and worries of traveling with your kids. Your mind is clearer and your emotional state calmer, allowing you to write a more accurate to-do list and other important travel reminders for yourself.

Its best to have everything packed and ready at least two days before youre scheduled to leave. Double-check reservations for your vacation. Make sure your tickets and other travel documents are complete and ensconced safely within your hand-carry bag. Speaking of hand-carry bags, make sure that youve got the usual packing essentials in it as well.

When packing clothes, make sure you take note of clothes which are appropriate for your destination and those that you may have need of for long-distance train travel. Pack pillows and blankets with you, too.

Last but not the least, make sure youve got enough pocket money with you! Trains cant unscheduled stops so if you suddenly lack for something, youll need to purchase something from the trains facilities.

Amenities
This is especially important when youre traveling with kids by train. For one thing, they lack the forbearance to tolerate any discomfort. Thats why you need to purchase the best seats for them. Consider the amenities offered as well. Kids have low boredom thresholds so they need to be constantly entertained. If they havent anything to entertain your kids with, you need to have toys, books, and games with you to keep them occupied.

Medication
As mentioned earlier on, trains cant make unscheduled stops unless you have a full-blown emergency in your hand. Train sickness, diarrhea, headaches, and the likes dont qualify as an emergency but all these can still make your kid feel bad for a long, long time.

Be prepared for such instances. Painkillers are good as long as you observe proper dosage when dispensing them. Aspirins, tablets for constipation and other stomach problems, and a first-aid kit for any unwanted accident should be included in your hand-carry bag.

If your kid has a pre-existing medical condition like asthma or certain known allergies, be sure youre prepared for any attack brought about by his condition.

Naturally, bring medication for yourself. Taking good care of your kid is meritorious, but neglecting yourself can only backfire on your kids. With you sick, whos left to take care of them?

Meals
Finally, be sure that you know what kind of meal arrangement to expect while traveling by train. If your kid has special dietary requirements, you should consider calling the train company to inquire about the food before making any plans for your own.

Nevertheless, it wouldnt hurt to store food in your handcarry bag: treats to reward your kids, snacks to keep them occupied, and maybe a sandwich or something equally fulfilling when they get too tired or hungry.

How to Plan a Greece vacation

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Going on a Greece vacation is most peoples dream come true. This is especially true for those who have followed this European countrys culture and history. But planning a vacation in such a far place is not as easy. There are a lot of things that you have to take into consideration when going there. Here are some of the things that you have to take into consideration when planning the trip.

1. weather
This is the primary information that you have to look into before settling on a date for the vacation. Remember that going to Greece will involve a lot of outdoor sight seeing that involve walking. If you are going there on a rainy month, you will just waste your money as you will not be able to go outside for the tours. It is of course better to plan your trip around the summer months where you can enjoy the sights better.

2. budget
another thing that you have to take into consideration is the money that you will be spending during the vacation. There are off peak months where hotels and airfares are basically cheaper. Try to look into those months. You will save as much as 50 percent if you do this.

Another trick if you are worried about your budget is to look for package deals being offered by tourism departments. These packages will be cheaper as they want to encourage tourists to come into the country.

You can also try booking your flight early. A lot of airlines will be offering cheaper rates for their airfares when you book your flight ahead of time. This is because you are basically reserving your tickets ahead of time. Make sure though that you will be able to use the tickets as rebooking may be hard and sometimes even more expensive.

3. Purpose
There are many reasons why you are taking a vacation. You may want to go on a vacation because you want to just relax and rest. If this is the case, then you might want to plan your trip in the beaches instead of the city. Greece has a lot of islands that you can go to. These resorts will be great havens for you.

If however you just love the ancient culture of the Grecian civilization and have just been salivating over the ancient ruins of the Greek structures, then join the local tour for some sightseeing. Most tours are available in packages or at your hotels concierge. Remember that it will be better to join tours with a lot of people as these are cheaper and of course more enjoyable.

4. companions
your itinerary will depend a lot in your companions in the trip. If you have children with you, it is important not to put a lot of activities that involve a lot of walking. Kids easily tire and they cannot go on all day just walking. They also need to rest at the hotel. You should also be including activities that they will enjoy. Put yourself in their shoes, would you be interested in the ancient ruins if you can go to a carnival or some other fun place where you can play and have a great time?

When planning your Greece vacation, consider the people that will be coming with you and not just yourself.
