Last Minute Family Travel Tips
Traveling at the last minute is a hassle. You will need to pack a lot of things and organize all your belongings, all while you are getting your documents ready, and all while you are making sure that you are able to get to everywhere you want to and need to be. Now multiply all these troubles with two or more people, and worse, a family. Traveling last minute as a family can be difficult, and it can be made even worse when you have to tag along children. If you are anticipating last minute travel with your family, then you may need to take note of the following tips.
- Are your children already the right age to go and travel with you, and appreciate everything that they see? Bringing kids along on a trip that involves museums, churches, long walks, and even hikes is not only dangerous and clumsy, but it can be wasteful. Think about it: you want to bring along people who will remember the trip, be consciously enriched by it, and truly love and know about the things that they see. Bringing a baby along to a museum is not only wasteful on your part, but it can be disrespectful to other museum goers who will be disturbed by a sobbing, bawling child.
In other words, if you can leave your children at home and if you know that they will not be able to appreciate certain things until they grow much older, then don’t feel guilty. Find a good babysitter, leave your children with some relatives, and go off and travel. Take the older kids with you, the ones that don’t need a lot of taking care of in order to enjoy things. Not only will you save money, you will also enjoy your trip more.
- Packing for a lot of people can be difficult, so you will need to plan what you need to pack before you start emptying your closet. For instance, if you are off on a trip that will last a week, take seven changes of clothes, may an additional two changes just in case something comes up, and the appropriate amount of underwear or over wear.
Then, ask your children to pull out the clothes that they want to have that fit exactly these qualifications, no more and no less. This way, they can help you and control the style of clothes that they want to bring, and you don’t have to take more clothes with you simply because one of your children insists.
- Try to get a buddy system in place. If you have more than one child, you may need to ask the older children to guard the younger ones. If you have two small children, you and your husband or wife may need to take one of each. All you need to do is find a way to guard every single child so that you lose no one. The problem with panic is that you can’t see everyone at once, so you need to break jobs down.
- Still insisting on bringing the kids along? Ask your travel agency, hotel, or tour group for a children’s discount, family discount, or a group discount. You may be able to get some amounts off your final price if you are able to bring in the tots or have a big group.
A Party in Your Mouth
One of the great joys of travel is getting the chance to experience some of the great tastes in the foods from around the country or around the world. The great thing about America is that there are so many ethnic populations and the country is so big and diverse that you can travel for many years and still be surprised by wonderful new tastes and culinary delights in the restaurants from around the country.
In the movie My Cousin Vinnie, two New Yorkers find themselves encountering culture clash as they work to help a relative with legal problems in the American south. As the southern mechanic explains that they have some of the greatest mud collections in the world in South Carolina, the New Yorker responds, Hows your Chinese food?
The Chinese food in New York has taken on certain fame and reputation of being the finest that can be had this side of China. While one can find good Chinese food in virtually any city or berg in the country, the small area of New York City called Chinatown boasts the best that can be found. And to be sure, that boast is not without merit. The chefs who prepare the Chinese food in these restaurants possess the recipes and perhaps age old talents that they can put a Chinese meal on your plate, whether its simple or very complex, that will have you off of Chinese food in any other part of the country or world because, to be frank, none other can compare to it.
New York boasts of being the home of some of the greatest food in the entire country. While it would take a gourmet chef months to test out that theory, there is no question that the city has some reason to stand behind its claim. From famous New York pizza to a gyros sandwich that melts in your mouth to the proverbial hot dog at Yankee stadium, eating in New York is as much an attraction as the museums and theater district.
But when it comes to seafood, there is plenty of competition for The Big Apple. In San Francisco on the other side of the country, some of greatest delicacies are harvested from the warm Pacific Ocean to be served in the great restaurants along the harbors. You can go back many times and try every delicacy from sea bass to swordfish before you can decide you truly have tasted it all of the San Francisco cuisine.
But for lobster, it might be yet another plane flight to Cape Cod, Boston or even northern Maine. In the pristine towns up and down route 1 on Maines east coast, you dont need a suit and a tie to enjoy the finest lobster that can be had anywhere. In season, you can drive up to what they call a lobster pound where you can gaze down into an over packed cooler full of live lobsters and pick your own. You can watch as your future lunch or dinner is tied in a burlap sack and dropped into an outdoor pot of boiling seawater to be served to you to eat with your hands at picnic tables outside. It is both a fabulous taste treat and a truly unique dinning experience all at once.
Great foods abound all around this great nation of ours. From the finest steak money can buy in Kansas City to the exotic tastes of Cajun cuisine in southern Louisiana to a bratwurst that will make you German even you arent in Chicagos busy pubs and restaurants to salmon that was leaping up the falls this morning in far west Washington state, the food that abounds in this rich country is truly a delight that is not to be missed.
Area Museums Educate and Entertain
If you love learning, and I hope you do, because once you stop learning, there really is no need to continue existing, then there will be plenty of museums in and around Seattle Washington that will feed the mind while entertaining you and your family. The vast number of museums in this area makes it a very interesting place to visit. There are museums here that cover everything from the Klondike Gold Rush to Log Houses and many, many things in between.
In addition to the two museums mentioned above there are several interesting museums to visit while in Seattle. The first one is the Museum of Flight. This is probably one of the museums that Seattle is most proud of. It is consistently voted one of, if not the best of its kind in the country. Learn about the history of flight and even take a ride in a flight simulator or tour the original Air Force One. No matter how you feel about flying, I’m almost certain that someone in your group (especially if there are any boys) will find this museum to be of great interest.
The Northwest Railway Museum is another museum that is not only educational but also fun for everyone in the family as well. Visit the Depot, which has been fully restored to its originally splendor or take a ride on one of the trains. Whatever you fancy, your little guy’s (even your not so little guy’s) eyes will light up at the idea of riding the rails. The mission of this museum is to educate the public on the vital role that railroads have played in the development of Washington State throughout history. I think they are achieving their goal quite nicely and am happy to be able to make more of the public aware of them and their mission.
The next museum that is a little out of the ordinary and yet vastly interesting and educational is the Whale Museum. This is of particular interest if you intend to do any whale watching while you are visiting the great city of Seattle. Whale watching is always a great deal of fun and it is even more fun if you are armed with the knowledge that can be gleaned by spending a little time learning about whales at the Whale Museum before you go on your whale watching excursion.
The Odyssey Maritime Discovery Center is another of the great museums that can be found in Seattle. This museum not only offers great resources and information about the maritime history that is so important to Seattle today but interactive displays that encourage children to learn and explore by doing. This is a great place to spend the day, but pay close attention to their hours for the day you are planning to attend as this center has shorter weekday hours than most museums.
The Wing Luke Asian Museum is the only museum of its kind in the U.S. This museum is devoted to preserving and promoting Asian Pacific American culture, history, and art. This museum has a permanent exhibit that is set up to remind us of the internment camps that were used for Japanese Americans during the Second World War. I think that this, more than anything else is an important reminder and well worth the visit and there are many more exhibits that offer entertainment and education.
I hope that you will visit one or more of these great museums. I think you will be surprised to find how educational and fun they really are for the entire family.
