Last Minute Summer Travel Tips
Summer is getting away, but youre determined not to let spring come without first enjoying yourself under the sun. No matter how last minute your travel plans are, the tips below can guarantee that youll have a summer vacation to remember!
Budget
Start your travel plans by eliminating your most pressing worry and one that has the greatest impact on your plans. How much can you afford to spend for your last summer trip?
Be aware that because youre planning at the last minute, discounts and other incentives travelers are usually entitled to wont be available to you. You may have to pay more and tolerate less than 5-star accommodations because you havent made any advanced reservations.
To save on money, you should look for a destination that offers you lots of free attractions and activities to visit and do. If you are amenable to working with a travel agency, having them prepare all your travel plans could give you cheaper rates for a bundled package.
Choosing a Destination
Lets be realistic. If you pick on the usual summer favorites like Hawaii, Florida, or California, you need to be prepared to jostle with the crowds every second of the day. Accommodations would also be difficult to obtain and even finding a good and affordable place to eat could also be a challenge.
Why not be adventurous for a change? Consider looking into secret or little-known summer getaways. Winter retreats like Colorado and Boston may seem like unlikely places to visit during the summer but with a little research, youll be surprised at the hidden gems of attractions they have to offer.
Another thing you should consider is what you can do when you finally get to your destination. Its best to look for a destination which can immediately offer you activities youre interested in. If youre a nature lover, for instance, you might be hard-pressed to find challenging nature walks in the city jungle of New York. Likewise, urban travelers might be intimidated by the rugged outdoors found in Montana or the swampy beauty of Louisiana.
Choosing Your Mode of Transportation
Determining how you travel can also make a huge difference with your plans.
If youre greatly worried about time constraints and youd like to make the most out of the last days of summer vacation, traveling by plane is the best option. Its also one of the more expensive options but if you stay away from the business or first class section then you can probably save a bit more funds for additional pocket money.
For those with adventurous spirits, traveling by car or using a rented RV is something you should consider. Traveling hours are longer, but you also get to enjoy beautiful scenery on the road, meet new friends pursuing a similar route, and discover new places of interest as you get nearer your destination. Make sure, however, you take all the safety precautions when traveling.
For a more leisurely and luxurious way of traveling, consider traveling by train or by taking a cruise to reach your destination.
Packing
Make a list. Yes, youre intelligent, youve a great memory, and youre organized but if you want to be sure about packing everything you need, make a list. Making one wont hurt. Find out weather conditions in your destination to ensure you bring appropriate clothing. Lastly, make sure youve got stuff for sun protection with you in your hand-carry bag.
Enjoy the last days of summer!
Seattle Freebies offer Cultural Significance
Seattle Washington is a great place to visit for many reasons. Whether you are a nature lover or more into the things that define a civilization such as shopping malls, museums, and one Starbucks, Seattle has a little bit of everything to offer its visitors. In fact, visitors could quite easily find that they have done and spent all that they should have rather early in their travel time if they aren’t careful.
Below you will find a few great things to do on your trip that won’t require robbing the children’s college fund in order to pay for. I’m all for paying good money for good fun, but if I can find good fun for free, that means there’s more money left for things that would have otherwise been off limits because of prohibitive costs. So go ahead and plan the dinner train, you can make up the cost by eating breakfast from a box two mornings in a row or spending an afternoon in one of Seattle’s many great parks.
If you’d rather find indoor activities that are free, here are a few suggestions:
1) Frye Art Museum. Not only is the art top of the line, but the architecture is glorious as well. Through January of 2007, the Frye Art Museum is host to a very unique sound sculpture called Trimpin: Klompen this exhibit is comprised of 120 wooden Dutch shoes that literally dance before your very eyes. This exhibit is only one of many great exhibits that are sure to delight everyone in your group. This museum focuses on contemporary art from the 19th century to the present.
2) Museum and Arts Center. This particular museum is located about 50 miles outside of Seattle but might be worth the drive, especially if you enjoy taking in the scenery of the area. The fact that the museum is free is sometimes enough to make it worth the drive. Among the many exhibits that you or your children may find interesting is an exhibit of mammoth and mastodon in addition to a video on the mastodon excavation. In addition to this exhibit there are other exhibits that feature local artists and pioneer and historical displays.
3) Bellevue Arts Museum. This museum is only free on the first Friday night of every month. In addition to free admission and great art, there are live music and lectures from 5:30-9:00 pm. I feel this bears mentioning here because there are times to visit when this is free and I feel that this is a culturally significant activity that the entire family can enjoy.
4) Seattle Asian Art Museum. This museum is free on the first Thursday and the first Saturday of each month. Currently there is an exhibit of exquisite Buddhist art that represent the influences of Indian, Chinese, Tibetan, Korean, and Japanese artistic interpretations.
5) Wing Luke Asian Museum. This museum also offers free admission on the first Thursday of every month. Here you will find art and exhibits that are devoted to the Asian Pacific American culture. There is also a multimedia station that allows visitors to hear interviews with Japanese American citizens who were forced into internment camps during WWII. I think this is a museum that should be on everyone’s to do list whether you can make it on one of the free days or not. There is a lot to be learned here and I hope that you will be up for the lessons.
While these museums are for the most part smaller museums, they still represent a significant contribution not only of art, but history to the world of art and artists. Even if the cultural offerings of the many museums aren’t that appealing to you on a personal level, the benefits to your children might be surprising-especially when you consider the fact that you didn’t have to pay a dime for admission.
Angel Island is a Diversion from the Ordinary
Whether you are a true nature lover or simply enjoy the thrill of an educational field trip, you will find both the wonders of nature and a deep sense of history while visiting Angel Island. In fact, I would suggest making Angel Island a must see destination while visiting San Francisco.
In the great city of San Francisco, which has so much to offer visitors, it’s almost impossible to find that one thing that will be truly special and unique about your trip. Angel Island is just that thing. Wherever your interests lie, there is something that will attract the attention of people of all ages, economic situations, and other walks of life. If you can’t find something that will interest you here, you really should rethink your interests.
For the nature lovers there is plenty of interest in way of plant life, bird life, and other animal life that should be of interests. There are even specialized tours available that will highlight and focus on the wide variety of life on this great island. Not only are there a great variety of land animals but a good representation of sea animals can be observed here as well. If you love nature, this is a great place to get a good dose of it while in the big city of San Francisco. Not only can you enjoy the sea animals on the ferry ride over (if you choose a ferry for your transportation) but you get to enjoy the plant and animal life on the island as well. Don’t forget the air animals either though. There are many varieties of birds that are well represented here as well.
For those that prefer more active pursuits, there is plenty on Angel Island to keep you entertained and happy. First of all, there is plenty to offer by way of hikes. There are even guided hiking tours that offer the safety of numbers (very good for beginning hikers) and information about the island and its rich history. If hiking isn’t really your thing, there are also bike rentals available on the island as well. With several trails to choose from with varying degrees of difficulty, even the beginner can enjoy a nice ride around the island.
My personal favorite physical activity here would be the kayak tours. For the right price you can book a guided kayak tour around the island. The tour includes equipment rental, your guide for the day, and a picnic lunch this would be for the all day tour, which will take you around the entire island. There is a 2 and a half hour tour if you aren’t too sure about the whole kayaking thing or want to have time to enjoy other aspects of the island on your trip as well. The beauty of a trip to Angel Island is that there really is no right or wrong way to go about enjoying your day.
For sun lovers, there are several beaches where you can bring a blanket and lie down with a good book in order to catch some rays. I do not recommend swimming from Angel Island as the water isn’t the cleanest nor is it the calmest. The tides are dangerous and can turn amazingly quickly. But if you love books and find that you could use a ray or two, let the kids and the rest of the family go biking, hiking, touring, and all that other good stuff while you catch up on the latest best seller at the beach.
All of this and I haven’t even really hinted at the rich history of Angel Island. There are many activities planned throughout the year that introduce visitors to the rich history of this island. From Civil War Days to the Potomac Tours to the Victorian Christmas there are brief snapshots into the history of this great island. Beyond these events there are tram tours that are offered almost daily during the regular season on the island that provide brief overviews into the islands history. This would be a great way to spend a day while visiting San Francisco.
